The Urban and Regional Department in the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2016. Candidate’s specialization must be in Urban Design
The Position: Candidates will undertake teaching, research/creative activity, and service activities in the graduate and undergraduate degree programs of the Department. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to taking an active role in shaping the department’s curriculum. The successful candidate also will articulate an agenda for continuing scholarship and service activities. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in urban and regional planning or urban design. ABD status on the Ph.D. may be considered, but the Ph.D. must be completed by September 1, 2016.
- Professional planning experience
- Demonstrated potential for scholarship
- Demonstrated expertise in urban design with interests in one or more of the following: urban design theory, history of the built environment, land use planning, international planning, or environmental planning.
- Demonstrated ability to be responsive to educational equity goals of the university and its increasing ethnic and international character.

- a cover letter that describes the candidate’s teaching and research experience/interests, and that addresses the duties and qualifications articulated in the position description;
- a curriculum vitae comprised of at least those elements specified on the application form, including the names, titles, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate’s potential for success in this position;

Finalists for the position will provide:
- an official transcript showing highest degree earned;
- three recent letters of reference; and
- an in-class teaching/research presentation during their visit.

The College: As one of eight colleges and schools on campus, the College of Environmental Design serves approximately 1,500 undergraduate majors and 190 graduate students in five undergraduate and four graduate degree programs offered by five units—the departments of Architecture, Art, Landscape Architecture, and Urban and Regional Planning; and the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies. Masters programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban and Regional Planning are accredited, and the inaugural class entered the Master of Science in Regenerative Studies program in the fall of 2004. The College maintains the Kellogg University Art Gallery, special architectural archives, art and design collections, and the Neutra VDL Research House in Los Angeles.
The Department: The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Cal Poly Pomona offers two accredited professional programs in urban and regional planning, focusing on applied planning and research. The department’s programs emphasize interdisciplinary learning and linkages between practice and theory, taking advantage of connections with the architecture, landscape architecture, regenerative studies and art programs that are also housed in the College of Environmental Design. The faculty emphasizes teaching, enriched by research activities, professional involvement, and community service. The undergraduate program provides a diverse student body with an entry into professional planning practice. The graduate program, offered primarily in the evening, provides a professionally-oriented program. The department has 9 full time faculty and serves 60 graduate and over 200 undergraduate students.
